Why Local Funding For Education is Not Enough

Despite the fact that state governments are responsible to ensure that all children have access to education, most local and town governments feel the responsibility is left solely on their shoulders. Most school districts are funded by local governments, including those districts that have seen a downswing in the economy, like in the Rust Belt states. The result is lack of equitable school funding for the children that still reside in these locations because towns are strapped for resources to support schools. Many schools in this dilemma are looking to merge districts or even ship students to other districts- that could even be across state lines. But wealthier surrounding districts aren’t so willing to take students that come from cities down on their luck.
